Review

I read this for two reasons: 1) I never learned this stuff in school and always wished that I had, and 2) My daughter will start studying this soon and it wouldn’t hurt if I actually understood it.

Unfortunately, this book contains some of the most officious, self-absorbed writing I’ve ever read. (And I read my own stuff.) A sample: As he’s explaining a particular theorem, Dr. Berlinski points out that the solution to a problem is beyond the reach of the combined intellectual capacity of the Dook University English Department. I remember that more than the actual material of the book. Is Dr. B a bitter genius who wasn’t appropriately fawned over while a guest professor? Could be....
