Review

I’ve never read any Thomas Pynchon, so I thought I’d start here.

According to Hollywood legend, after the premiere of 2001: A Space Odyssey, Cary Grant stood up and said, “Would somebody please tell me what the hell I just saw”? Had that feeling at the end of this book.

The scientific and historical details of the book were amazing. I’ve spent enough time walking in Zürich and I’ve read about the color Mauve and the foundation of the chemical industry to know that at least some of the details are correct. I assume most of the other details are correct (wish I knew more about the German film industry), which is astounding. All in all, I’m guessing I actually caught on to 5% of what was actually happening here.

FWIW, Amazon has a book entitled Pictures Showing What Happens on Every Page of Thomas Pynchon’s Novel Gravity’s Rainbow. 760 pages of artwork, it sounds fascinating.
